Eurovision kicks off first semi amid Israel boycott controversy
Vienna hosts the first Eurovision semi as Israel participation sparks withdrawals and warnings, with the UK broadcasting live and several countries opting out.
Vienna hosts the first Eurovision semi-final tonight, with Finland, Greece and Israel among the acts competing for a spot in the final. The annual song contest unfolds amid continued controversy over Israel’s participation, which has left several countries withdrawing or declining to broadcast. The UK’s Look Mum No Computer, who is guaranteed a spot in the final along with other Big Five members France, Germany and Italy, will perform during the second semi-final on Thursday 14 May.
Israel’s participation has prompted a formal warning to broadcaster Kan over endorsing a video urging viewers to use all 10 of their votes on Noam Bettan's entry, 'Michelle.' The tension comes as Spain, another Big Five member, withdrew from the contest this year after Israel was permitted to compete.
Across Europe, and in Ireland, the stance has shifted: Ireland’s RTÉ will not broadcast the competition and will instead air a Eurovision-themed Father Ted episode on RTÉ 2, reflecting a boycott stance. The Netherlands and Iceland have also reportedly declined to send acts.
Viewers in the UK can watch live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 8pm. Fans around the continent will be watching to see if any country can upset the favourites and take home Eurovision glory this year.
