Bengaluru Quarry Tragedy: Boulder Collapse Kills 7, Safety Under Scrutiny
A devastating boulder collapse at a quarry near Bengaluru claimed at least 7 lives, leaving behind a scene of tragedy and raising serious questions about worker safety. Migrant laborers were among the victims.
A routine workday turned into a horrific tragedy at a stone quarry in Hulukenahalli village on Bengaluru's outskirts on Thursday, July 2, 2026. A massive boulder crashed onto a tractor loading crushed stones, killing at least seven workers and injuring five others. The scene was grim, with half-eaten meals and unopened water bottles scattered, poignant reminders of lives abruptly cut short. Two silent earthmovers and six drilling machines stood as mute witnesses to the disaster.
The quarry, one of many crusher units in the area, usually hums with the sound of drilling and blasting. However, on Thursday afternoon, an eerie silence pervaded as police sealed off the area and groups of workers watched from a nearby hill, unable to tear themselves away despite repeated requests to leave. The victims were largely migrant labourers from Yadgir and Raichur in Karnataka, as well as from Jharkhand, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the vulnerability of this workforce.
Eyewitness accounts describe how some workers were eating before their shift, while others had already begun loading stones when the boulder broke loose and came crashing down. A critical concern raised by the workers is the alleged lack of basic protective equipment. Laxminarayan, one of the labourers, stated, "Nobody has a helmet, gloves or any other safety gear." He further added that the quarry owner, Udayshankar, had previously warned workers not to work in a specific 'buffer zone' due to its danger. This raises serious questions about adherence to safety protocols and the conditions under which these labourers were working.
The incident has prompted authorities to pledge action against illegal quarrying activities and investigate potential safety violations and negligence. As rescue teams continue their operations and investigations unfold, the community mourns the loss of life and calls for accountability to ensure such a tragedy never recurs.
