Indian Envoy Meets Rescued Crew Amid Rising Gulf Maritime Concerns

India's Ambassador to Oman, Prashant Pise, met with 20 Indian crew members of the vessel MT Jalveer in Muscat on Monday, June 15, 2026. The meeting comes as the crew prepares for their repatriation to India after being safely evacuated ashore following an incident on June 11. The Guinea-Bissau-flagged MT Jalveer's crew was rescued in a coordinated effort with Omani authorities.

The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed the meeting, stating that the Ambassador interacted with the crew members and wished them a safe journey home. The embassy reiterated its commitment to providing prompt assistance and support to Indian nationals in distress, ensuring their welfare and safe return. This incident involving the MT Jalveer is the third in recent days to affect merchant ships with Indian crew members in the region.

Just days before the MT Jalveer incident, on June 8, U.S. forces disabled a Palau-flagged oil tanker, MT Marivex, which was carrying 24 Indian seafarers. Fortunately, all crew members aboard the MT Marivex were safely rescued. Tragically, a separate incident on Wednesday saw the U.S. strike another Palau-flagged tanker, MT Settebello, resulting in the deaths of three out of the 24 Indian sailors on board.

These recurring incidents have heightened concerns over the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the Gulf region. India's government has taken these events very seriously, confirming on Thursday that the three separate strikes on the Settebello, Marivex, and Jalveer "came from the US Navy." This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for clarity and measures to protect maritime personnel in the volatile waters off the Oman coast.
