ECI kicks off Phase II of Special Intensive Revision in 12 states

The Election Commission has launched the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to clean up and update electoral rolls across 12 states and union territories, covering about 51 crore voters. The enumeration for Phase II is slated to begin on November 4, with draft rolls expected to be published around December 9 and the final electoral rolls planned for February 7. This phase aims to enhance accuracy and transparency in voter lists ahead of upcoming polls.

A two-day conference of Chief Electoral Officers held in New Delhi assessed the preparedness across states and UTs for pan-India SIR. The Commission directed CEOs to finalize their plans and ensure smooth execution, signaling a coordinated effort to tighten electoral roll quality before data is released to the public.

In a related note, Assam will not be part of the general SIR rollout. The EC explained that Assam will conduct a separate Special Intensive Revision due to unique legal provisions governing its electoral rolls. This carve-out underscores the Commission’s tailored approach to regional legal frameworks while keeping the broader Phase II timetable on track.

Draft rolls for Phase II are expected to be published by some states on December 9, with final lists scheduled to be released in February. Voters are encouraged to check their names during the draft phase and submit corrections if needed. The exercise is designed to minimize errors, reduce duplicates, and ensure a clean, credible voter registry ahead of polls.

Together, these steps reflect the Commission’s commitment to accurate, timely, and transparent voter information, while accommodating regional legal nuances and maintaining momentum on a nationwide revision drive ahead of elections.
