Shockwaves hit Tripura as DGP Anurag Dhankar is found dead in his office under mysterious circumstances. Police launch an investigation into the unfolding tragedy.
Tripura's Director General of Police, Anurag Dhankar, was tragically found dead under mysterious circumstances in his office on Monday, July 20, 2026, sending shockwaves across the state. The 1994-batch IPS officer's body was discovered in the washroom adjacent to his chamber at the police headquarters on Akhaura Road in Agartala around 11:40 a.m.
Sources indicate that Mr. Dhankar had entered the office bathroom around 11 a.m. After a prolonged period of absence, his concerned staff were compelled to force open the door, where they made the grim discovery. He was immediately transported to the Agartala Medical College and GBP Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but was sadly declared dead by doctors.
The news prompted an immediate response from high-ranking officials. Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with other senior government and security personnel, swiftly visited the hospital upon hearing the tragic announcement. While no official statements regarding the incident have been released, police have registered a case of unnatural death and have initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the DGP's demise. Reports suggest that authorities are looking into all possibilities, including the suspicion that he may have taken his own life.
Mr. Dhankar's sudden passing has deeply shaken the entire state, especially as he was reportedly nearing the end of his distinguished service. He had assumed the crucial office of DGP on May 18 of the previous year (May 2025) and had dedicated almost 18 years of his career to serving Tripura in various capacities. His long-standing commitment and leadership make this an even more profound loss for the state's police force and its administration.
