Kerala Local Body Counting Begins as LDF, UDF Vie for Power

Counting began today in Kerala's local body elections, with postal ballots tallied first before the EVM vote count. The exercise is taking place at 244 counting centers across the state and at 14 district collectorates, with some centers reporting procedural snags such as entry issues for booth agents and candidates in Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Vadakara. Officials have not indicated when results will be final, but the process is already underway across the two-phase polls.

This year saw the highest turnout since the civic polls began in 1995, a mark the State Election Commission highlighted as voters turned out in force to shape local governance. Phase two brought a turnout of 76.08%, while phase one recorded 70.91%, pushing the overall participation to 73.69%. Across 23,573 wards in 1,199 local bodies, residents voted for representatives at panchayat, municipal, and corporate levels, setting the stage for a crowded field of outcomes.

The contest features major fronts—LDF, UDF, and NDA—vying to shape local administration in districts across the state, including Idukki, where analysts are watching closely for potential shifts. As counting proceeds, several wards are expected to tilt the balance in favor of incumbents or opposition groups. The oath-taking ceremony for elected panchayat members and municipal councillors is scheduled for December 21 at 10 am, with corporation councillors taking oath at 11 am on the same day, signaling the dawn of new local leadership.

Analysts say the high turnout could reflect a desire for change at the grassroots level or enthusiasm for performance-based evaluation of local services. While results trickle in, parties are already parsing early indicators from executive centers and ward-level tallies, bracing for a chorus of verdicts that could echo into the state political scene.
