Boston Dynamics' Atlas returns in a production version video, showing heavy lifting and complex moves like a handstand. The factory-ready robot uses reinforcement learning to refine its control in real-world tasks.
On Tuesday, Boston Dynamics, a robotics unit of Hyundai Motor Group, shared a video of its humanoid robot Atlas executing a handstand and other complicated tricks. This YouTube video is the first example of the production version of Atlas, and there's also a research version used to test core technologies and functions. The new video footage seemed to be designed to show Atlas' capacity to lift heavy loads and complete tasks in awkward or unusual positions. In these areas, it is expected to be able to work in the factory.

Atlas did a handstand in the video that he then lifted off with both arms, with his torso almost horizontal. The robot also performed a very complex gymnastic move in which it bent its body into an “L” shape to then stand itself up.
These motions were driven by full-body control technology using reinforcement learning, which enables robots to repeat simulations and trial-and-error motions to learn the strategy of motion and balance, according to Hyundai Motor Group.

Atlas' development model will be used in the future to test the factory floor at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia. Hyundai Motor Group has previously announced its intention to debut the Atlas model at the Georgia location from 2028 and gradually expand its use to parts manufacturing tasks from 2030.
