Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday for the Pahalgam terror attack, saying that leadership is about accepting responsibility as well as credit. She also questioned why Home Minister Amit Shah is still in office after the violence in Manipur, the Delhi riots, and Pahalgam occurred under his supervision.
She added that Shah mentioned Jawaharlal Nehru and even "tears" from her mother Sonia Gandhi, but she did not address why Operation Sindoor was halted in the middle, "when the enemy had nowhere to go." She claimed that US President Donald Trump's announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan reflects Modi's "irresponsibility."
She read out the names of the 25 Indian victims of the April 22 terror attack during a "Special Discussion on India's Strong, Successful and Decisive Operation Sindoor in Response to the Terror Attack in Pahalgam" in the Lok Sabha. BJP MPs yelled "Hindu" as she called them "Bharatiya," and Congress lawmakers echoed her.
"On that day in Pahalgam, 26 people were killed in front of their families. All those people who were present in Baisaran Valley on that day did not have any security. No matter how many operations you conduct, you cannot hide behind the truth," she said.
"Leadership is not just about taking credit, but responsibility also needs to be taken... For the first time in the history of our country, the war was stopped abruptl,y and the announcement of the decision was made by the US President. This is reflective of the irresponsibility of our Prime Minister. Our diplomacy has been unsuccessful," she said.
She asserted that Modi wants to claim credit and may even claim Olympic medals for athletes. Hours after Shah attacked the Congress, Priyanka claimed that the terror attacks in Uri, Pathankot, and Pulwama occurred during the tenure of Rajnath Singh, who is currently the Defense Minister.
"Manipur is burning, Delhi riots and Pahalgam happened under the nose of Amit Shah. He is still in the chair. Why?" she asked.
"It is a big failure of our government and intelligence agencies. Who will take responsibility of this? Has anyone resigned? They keep talking about past but who will answer about what is happening in present," she said.
Priyanka Gandhi’s sharp remarks in Parliament have reignited debate over national security, accountability, and leadership transparency. While the government highlighted past sacrifices and military action, it avoided answering why the war was halted. As citizens seek clear answers, this political standoff could shape future discourse on how India responds to terror and who takes responsibility when failures occur.
