Tragedy in Gulf: Indian Engineer Heramb Karmarkar Dies in Ship Attack

The maritime community is in mourning after Heramb Karmarkar, a 30-year-old Indian marine engineer, was confirmed dead following an attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman on Sunday. His father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, confirmed the tragic news on Wednesday. Karmarkar's last known communication with his family, a poignant text message, stated that the ship had "safely crossed" before the incident unfolded.

Karmarkar was one of 11 Indian nationals among the 24-member crew aboard the Cyprus-flagged container ship. Authorities in Cyprus described the attack as being carried out by an "unidentified projectile." In a significant development, Iran claimed responsibility for the strike, asserting that the vessel had attempted to traverse an unauthorized route despite repeated warnings to alter its course.

This incident marks a deeply troubling trend, as Karmarkar's death is the second loss of an Indian seafarer in the region within a mere 72 hours. Just days prior, another Indian sailor was killed after two vessels were targeted while navigating the critical Strait of Hormuz. Following that earlier attack, the Indian government lodged a strong protest with Iran and summoned its deputy ambassador, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

In response to these escalating threats to Indian seafarers, the central government acted swiftly. On Wednesday, an inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, convened to devise protective measures. The government announced the implementation of an operational dashboard designed to track every Indian seafarer, regardless of the vessel's flag, and the appointment of a dedicated liaison officer for each affected family. The government reiterated its commitment to a "seafarer-first" approach as the security situation across West Asia remains highly volatile.
