Chandigarh witnessed a solemn observance of Kargil Vijay Diwas as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini led the nation in paying homage to the valiant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War. The 27th anniversary of this historic victory served as a poignant reminder of India's unwavering courage and resolve.
Chief Minister Mann laid a wreath at the War Memorial in Bougainvillea Garden, Chandigarh, honoring the brave hearts of the Kargil conflict. He emphasized that Kargil Vijay Diwas stands as a powerful symbol of the Indian armed forces' extraordinary bravery. Mann acknowledged the nation's eternal debt to these courageous individuals who defend our borders under the most challenging conditions. He highlighted a somber statistic, noting that out of the 527 soldiers martyred in the 1999 war, approximately 65 hailed from Punjab. In a touching gesture, he also met with families of some Kargil martyrs, stating that "martyrs do not belong to just one family; they sacrifice their lives for the nation, and the country becomes their family."
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also joined the tributes, posting on X (formerly Twitter) in Hindi, praising the soldiers' indomitable courage and valor displayed in the rugged mountains of Kargil. He asserted that their immortal sacrifice, unwavering resolve, and unparalleled bravery serve as a perpetual inspiration for every Indian. Saini declared that their valor would forever keep the eternal flame of patriotism alive in the hearts of the nation's youth.
Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the successful culmination of 'Operation Vijay' on July 26, 1999. This day marks India's glorious victory when its soldiers, battling harsh snow-clad peaks and relentless firing from Pakistani troops, successfully reclaimed high-altitude strategic positions in Kargil, Leh. The conflict, fought between May and July 1999, remains a testament to the Indian Army's grit and determination in safeguarding national integrity.
