Bangladesh Rejects ICC's Unreasonable T20 World Cup 2026 Conditions

Bangladesh has rejected what it calls 'unreasonable conditions' set by the ICC for its participation in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in India, highlighting venue concerns and the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL as core issues. Officials said the team will not travel to India under the current terms, even as talks with the ICC continue and security assurances are reiterated.
Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul warned that if the ICC succumbs to pressure from the Indian board and imposes conditions considered unreasonable, Bangladesh will not accept them. There are precedents where the ICC changed venues when India refused to play in Pakistan, and Bangladesh has reasonably asked for a venue change they deem acceptable.
Earlier, the BCB dismissed reports that ICC had set a January 21 deadline to confirm participation; ICC sources, however, indicated an ultimatum for a final decision by January 21. With the World Cup starting on February 7, the timing adds to the pressure on both sides.
For Bangladesh, a withdrawal could open the door to a replacement, with Scotland mentioned as next in line according to current rankings.
On January 17, an ICC representative met with BCB officials at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka to discuss the venue issue. The board said it conveyed reluctance to play at the chosen venue and requested an alternate venue, though the final decision remains unsettled.
The dispute underscores a tense build-up to the tournament as teams plan for a February start and security arrangements are tested amid political sensitivities in world cricket.
