The Palestinian Authority has made an urgent plea to the Indian government and humanitarian organizations, calling for immediate assistance to rescue its healthcare sector from a "state of collapse." This dire situation is a direct consequence of nearly three years of military campaigns by Israel, severely impacting hospitals in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
Ambassador of Palestine, Abdullah M. Abu Shawesh, held a press conference on Friday to highlight the catastrophic conditions. He specifically invoked India's 'Aarogya Maitri' project, a commendable initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr. Abu Shawesh quoted PM Modi, stating, "Under this project, India will provide essential medical supplies to any developing country affected by natural disaster or humanitarian crises." The Ambassador argued that this is the precise moment for India to extend this aid to the Palestinian people.
With a poignant appeal, Mr. Abu Shawesh asked, "It is the exact moment to save thousands of innocent lives. If not India and the Indian people, then who? If not now, then when? Every life matters." He underscored that the Palestinian healthcare sector desperately requires urgent international support, particularly an immediate provision of life-saving, critically essential medicines and medical supplies valued at $100 million.
The crisis is deep-seated, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health struggling to provide approximately 520 essential medicines to its hospitals. Alarming statistics show that nearly 180 of these crucial drugs are "completely unavailable." The situation for cancer patients is particularly dire: out of 97 specialized medicines for cancer and tumor treatment, 50 are currently at "zero stock levels." This alarming shortage puts nearly 4,000 cancer patients at immediate and severe risk. Furthermore, hospitals are running critically short of other vital items such as anaesthetic medicines and surgical sutures, exacerbating an already fragile medical system.
This plea from the Palestinian envoy underscores a profound humanitarian emergency, urging India, known for its compassionate initiatives, to step forward and provide crucial support to prevent further loss of life and alleviate immense suffering.
