Punjab Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattana died Thursday evening after a truck rammed his stationary SUV on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway near Kundli in Haryana's Sonipat district. He was 45 and had previously contested elections from Talwandi Sabo in Punjab; he also served as the district Congress president for Bathinda Rural.
Police said the SUV had been parked to fix a deflated tyre when the rear-end crash occurred, authorities added. Jattana and his driver Parminder Singh were killed in the impact, while his gunman sustained injuries. The truck driver fled the scene, and officials said the vehicle has since been identified.
Jattana's body was kept at the Sonipat Civil Hospital as investigators began piecing together the sequence of events. Local authorities have launched a manhunt for the runaway truck and are reviewing CCTV footage and vehicle registration details.
Senior Punjab leaders expressed shock and grief. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring described the loss as devastating and said the party stands by the family. Opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa also condoled Jattana's untimely demise and recalled his political journey.
The accident raises highway-safety concerns in the region as officers continue inquiries. The family faces a difficult period ahead, and officials have pledged to update the public as more details emerge.
