Congress women MPs have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla saying Narendra Modi’s absence from the House during the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address was not the result of any threat from the opposition but an act of fear.
Signatories include Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jyotsna Charandas Mahant, R. Sudha, Varsha Eknath Gaikwad and S. Jothimani, who argued they have been targeted simply for raising questions about the government's performance and demanding accountability.
They contended Birla is under pressure from the ruling party to defend the PM's non-appearance and said there was no basis for accusing the women MPs of threatening the PM.
They noted Birla had said in the House he had concrete information that many Congress members might move toward Modi's seat and carry out some unexpected act, and that Modi did not come to respond to the discussion.
In the Budget Session the Motion of Thanks passed without the prime minister addressing the House, following relentless protests by the Opposition.
They urged Birla to act as an impartial custodian, independent of political pressure, and to ensure accountability from the government.
This episode reflects ongoing friction between the Opposition and the government as Parliament resumes its sessions.
