A violent incident unfolded at Taipei's transit hub when a lone attacker used smoke grenades and a knife, injuring nine people around the Taipei Main Station area. He reportedly rode the subway for one stop, left the station and then tossed more smoke grenades on the street, causing pedestrians to flee in panic.
Authorities confirmed four of the injured were seriously hurt, and one pedestrian who was attacked had already been in cardiac arrest when taken to hospital. The suspect, who had worn a mask earlier, is believed to have jumped from a building while trying to evade arrest.
The incident prompted immediate security concerns across the city. Mayor Chiang Wan-an said security in train and subway stations would be intensified as investigators probe the background of the attacker for possible motives. Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai stressed that investigators are pursuing all leads to understand the incident and its purpose.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage and talking to witnesses as security teams increase patrols in Taiwan’s transit network. Transport operators reported no widespread disruption to services for now, but added that extra staff would assist commuters and manage crowds as investigations continue.
