The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a significant warning: El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific are set to strengthen rapidly in the coming months. This intensification is expected to dramatically increase the likelihood of extreme weather events across the globe, including severe heatwaves, devastating droughts, and intense heavy rainfall.
According to WMO's latest monthly ‘Global Seasonal Climate Update,’ there's a strong indication of a rapid progression into a powerful El Niño event between July and September 2026. Forecast models from leading global centers show consistent and significant warming of ocean temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, with sea-surface temperature anomalies projected to exceed 2°C in key monitoring regions.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern, typically re-emerging every two to seven years and lasting between nine and twelve months. It's characterized by above-average sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The WMO's predictions are notably consistent, providing high confidence in this outlook.
The strengthening El Niño is anticipated to continue through the Northern Hemisphere autumn, extending its profound influence across numerous global regions. Simultaneously, the equatorial Atlantic basin is also expected to remain warmer than average, potentially exacerbating climate impacts.
In response to this looming threat, the WMO is stepping up its coordination efforts. This includes enhancing climate information services and bolstering early warning support. The goal is to assist governments, humanitarian agencies, and climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture and health, along with vulnerable communities, in preparing for the potential widespread impacts.
As the WMO Secretary stated, "El Niño conditions are already underway and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event – as accurately anticipated by WMO forecasts. This will intensify the chances of drought and heavy rainfall and the risk of heatwaves on land and marine heatwaves in many regions of the world." The world is now on high alert for the significant climatic shifts this powerful El Niño is expected to trigger.
