Suzlon Energy Shares Tank 5% After SEBI Slaps ₹29 Crore Penalty
Suzlon Energy faces a massive ₹29 crore SEBI penalty over financial misstatements. See why the stock is falling and how the company plans to fight back.
Investors in Suzlon Energy had a rough start to the week as the company's share price tumbled by nearly 5% on Monday. The stock hit a low of ₹54.40 following news that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has imposed heavy penalties on the wind energy giant and several of its key executives.
The regulator’s move comes after an investigation into financial statements from the 2013-14 fiscal year. SEBI found that Suzlon had significantly misrepresented its financial health during a slump sale of its Operations and Maintenance Services business. According to the regulator, the company reported a massive profit and an inflated net worth of over ₹2,663 crore, when the actual figure should have been closer to ₹741 crore. Because the transaction didn't unfold as documented, SEBI stepped in with a total fine of ₹29 crore.
Of the total penalty, Suzlon Energy is required to pay nearly ₹16 crore. Individual fines were also slapped on executives, including Vinod R. Tanti and Girish R. Tanti, who face penalties of over ₹5 crore each. Other officials like Kirti J. Vagadia and Amit Agarwal were also named in the order with smaller fines.
Despite the market's nervous reaction, Suzlon remains defiant. The company released a statement clarifying that these penalties will not impact its current financial or operational activities. They have also signaled their intention to fight the order, stating they will soon file an appeal before the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT).
Looking ahead, the company is continuing with its leadership transition plans. Suzlon recently announced the appointment of Ashok Ramachandran as the President for India Business, a role he will officially step into in 2026 as the company focuses on becoming a full-stack renewable energy player. While the stock has seen massive returns over the last five years, this regulatory hurdle serves as a reminder of the volatility inherent in the green energy sector.
