Sandra Bullock Breaks Silence on Bryan Randall's 'Traumatic' ALS Death
Sandra Bullock shares heartbreaking details about her late partner Bryan Randall's private battle with ALS, revealing the immense challenges she faced caring for him during the pandemic.
Hollywood star Sandra Bullock has, for the first time, opened up about the profound loss of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, who passed away in August 2023. Randall, a model-turned-photographer, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2020, a progressive nervous system disease that gradually erodes a person's ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe.
Bullock, 62, described the diagnosis as “traumatic” during an emotional appearance on the Smartless podcast, which is currently available to SiriusXM early access subscribers. She revealed that Randall had requested privacy regarding his illness, a wish she honored, which meant she “wasn't allowed to speak about it.”
The secrecy surrounding Randall’s illness, coupled with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, created immense pressure on Bullock. She admitted that maintaining silence “isolated me in the process” while she carried the “huge weight” of his diagnosis. She tried to convince herself, “Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet.” However, caring for Randall while also raising her two young children during the pandemic became, in her words, “a trifecta that was pretty dark.”
For a long time, only Bullock's sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew about Randall's condition. Eventually, Bullock confided in close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman’s wife, Amanda, finding some relief in sharing her burden. Randall and Bullock began dating in 2015 after she hired him to photograph her son Louis’ fifth birthday party, and their relationship spanned eight years until his passing.
