As Manipur nears the one-year mark of President's Rule, NDA legislators and alliance partners are being summoned to Delhi for a crucial meeting on the future of the state’s government. The gathering, set for February 2, is being described as a key step in discussions about restoration of a popular government and the shape of any potential leadership in Manipur.
Two MLAs confirmed they are headed to the national capital for the briefing, with one noting that a call came from the BJP’s Manipur in-charge to attend by 2 p.m. on Monday. The march to Delhi underscores the central leadership’s intent to chart a clear course as political dynamics in the state remain in flux.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is also travelling to Delhi to participate in talks with central leaders. Manipur BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi told reporters at Imphal airport that all NDA legislators have been invited and that there is “hope and belief” a popular government will be formed. Alliance partners — National People’s Party and Naga People’s Front — are also likely to take part in the discussions.
Security arrangements have been stepped up in Manipur, with additional forces requisitioned to handle any potential law-and-order issues in the days ahead as political activity intensifies. The move comes as President’s Rule, which was extended last year, is poised to reach one year on February 13. In recent months, the central government has held several reviews aimed at assessing whether a popular government could be restored.
While the hawk-eye focus remains on Delhi’s meeting, analysts caution that any transition will depend on political consensus among NDA partners and broader community leadership, along with the center’s assessment of stability and governance needs in Manipur.
