BJP Clinches Karimnagar Mayor Post in Landmark Election
BJP seizes control of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, naming a Mayor and Deputy Mayor in a landmark Telangana shift.
Karimnagar witnessed a landmark shift as BJP wrested control of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (MCK) in an indirect election held on Monday. The party bagged both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts as BJP corporators Kolagani Srinivas and Y. Sunil Rao were elected to the top slots with 34 votes against 21 for the Congress candidate. All nine newly elected BRS corporators abstained from voting, following the oath-taking ceremony in the afternoon. The BJP cadre celebrated the victory, crediting support from Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay, who joined the celebrations with the party's new corporators.
To ensure a smooth process and maintain order, prohibitory orders were imposed in the Karimnagar Police Commissionerate limits as security was stepped up ahead of and during the elections.
This victory marks the BJP's first time heading a Municipal Corporation in Telangana. The party previously headed a municipal corporation in 1981 in Visakhapatnam when NSN Reddy became mayor of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. Analysts say the result signals a shift in local politics and could influence development agendas in Karimnagar, though Congress presence remains through abstention and local politics continues to evolve. Residents and parties will be watching how the new leadership addresses local needs, governance, and service delivery in the coming months.
