A shocking incident unfolded on Japan's iconic Mount Fuji recently, as a father left his seven-year-old son behind on the mountain after the boy complained of feeling tired during a family hike. The boy, who was given snacks and a soft drink, was told to wait while his father continued his ascent towards the summit with his older brother.
The distressing situation came to light when a vigilant mountain worker discovered the young boy sitting alone on a bench near the sixth station of the Fujinomiya trail, at an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters (6,500 feet). Concerned for his safety, the worker offered the child shelter and promptly contacted the police, who then took the boy into protective custody.
Authorities managed to reach the father, who was reportedly three hours further up the mountain at the eighth station. He was instructed to descend immediately. Upon reuniting the father with his son, police issued a stern reprimand for his actions. Officers emphasized the severe dangers of Mount Fuji, an active volcano known for its unpredictable microclimate and the high risk of hypothermia, even in summer.
"Even if it means having to give up on climbing the mountain together, leaving a child behind is unacceptable," police officers stated, according to reports. The father, identified as being from Nagoya, faced criticism for his decision to leave such a young child unattended in such a perilous environment, especially when it would have taken him approximately eight hours to return to that spot.
