The oath is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, following a BJP Legislature Party meeting that signals the formal start of his next term.
Historically, the only other non-Congress chief minister to hold two terms was Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of the AGP, and his two terms were separated by years rather than consecutive terms. If Sarma’s oath proceeds as planned, it would mark a notable continuity for the BJP-led coalition in the state.
There is talk of a three-minister council in the new government, with one minister each from the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad, and Bodoland People’s Front. Speculation around the oath ceremony also touches on the political choreography, including a meeting to elect the BJP Legislature Party leader in the presence of Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
