Security forces in south Kashmir's Shopian have successfully neutralized a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant following a five-day-long anti-militancy operation. The body of the terrorist, identified as Zakir Ganai, was found at the encounter site on Wednesday, confirming his elimination in the fierce firefight.
This significant achievement comes after a joint operation launched by the Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) of Shopian, the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, and the CRPF. The operation was initiated based on specific intelligence inputs from the Jammu and Kashmir Police concerning the presence of militants in Shopian's Chanapora area. During the extensive search, an exchange of fire erupted between the security forces and the terrorist.
Arms, ammunition, and other war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site. The Jammu and Kashmir Police marked the success with a stern message posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "You can run but you can't hide!" This statement underscores the unwavering resolve of the security forces in combating militancy in the region.
The encounter originally erupted on July 4, when at least two terrorists were initially spotted in the area. While one LeT militant has been eliminated, the operation is still in progress as security forces continue their search for the second terrorist involved. The sustained effort highlights the continuous commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Union Territory.
