UDF Storms Kochi Corporation, LDF Stumbles to Historic Low
UDF clinches 47 seats in Kochi, nearing its 2010 peak, while LDF sinks to 20 seats as the city braces for a contested mayoral race.
The United Democratic Front (UDF) surged to power in Kochi Corporation, winning 47 seats — just one short of its best tally of 48 in 2010 and well above the 39 needed for a simple majority in the 76-member council. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was left reeling with only 20 seats, plus two more where it backed Independents. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained one seat, bringing its total to six, far from its target of double digits. The UDF tally also includes the Vyttila division won by UDF-backed Independent V.P. Chandran, who had won on a CPI(M) ticket in 2015.
With the mayor's post reserved for a woman this term, the UDF's potential mayoral candidates — Deepthy Mary Varghese, V.K. Minimol, and Shiny Mathew — have all won their respective seats. The party says its parliamentary team will decide the mayoral nominee, a process likely to spark intense discussions as it weighs alliances.
The results shift the city's political arithmetic. In the 2020 pre-delimitation poll, the council had 74 divisions; CPI(M) had led with 34 seats, UDF 31, and BJP five, with the possibility of independents tipping coalitions. This time, with UDF back in the lead and the LDF well short, the path to the mayoralty could hinge on post-poll negotiations and cross-aisle support. The LDF had accused the UDF of striking an unholy nexus with the BJP in four divisions — Elamakkara South, and other divisions — a claim that will likely colour post-poll bargaining. City watchers say governance will hinge on how quickly the winner consolidates support and delivers on urban development, sanitation, and traffic management.
