WhatsApp Unveils Optional Parental Controls for Teens
Big news for parents! WhatsApp introduces new, optional controls allowing guardians to manage teen privacy settings, group access, and more. Learn what's changing!
WhatsApp, the popular social messaging app, is rolling out new optional parental controls aimed at helping guardians manage their teenagers' online experience. This move comes as tech companies face increasing pressure to provide safer, age-appropriate environments for younger users. The new tools offer parents a range of options, including receiving notifications when their child joins or leaves a group chat.
Parents will also be able to decide on various privacy settings for their teen's account. It's crucial to note, however, that these controls do not allow parents to view messages, which remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption. According to social media analyst Matt Navarra, the optional nature of these controls could be seen as a weakness.
He suggests this strategy is “fairly convenient” for Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, as it helps them demonstrate a commitment to child safety to regulators without entirely relying on age verification.
Meta is trying to show regulators we have a child safety system, we have parental controls and we're rolling it out across our platforms,
Navarra commented, raising questions about how widely these features will actually be adopted by families.
The minimum age for WhatsApp usage is 13 in the UK, with some countries having higher age requirements. Parents can easily set up and adjust these controls using a PIN. Teenagers wishing to disable the controls would need this PIN, ensuring parental oversight.
Among the specific privacy settings available, parents can control who sees their child's profile photo and who can add them to groups. They can also manage how their teenager interacts with Channels, a feature allowing organizations and public figures to broadcast content. Additionally, parents can choose between the default 13+ setting for Meta AI, the app's optional built-in AI assistant, or a stricter “Limited Content” option.
WhatsApp states that these controls are designed to foster open conversations between parents and teens about app usage, all while maintaining the privacy of personal messages. This development unfolds amidst growing demands from governments and regulatory bodies for tech giants to enhance protections for children on their platforms.
For instance, the UK government plans to ban under-16s from social media platforms by March 2027, requiring robust age verification.
WhatsApp is currently exempt from this ban, categorized as a messaging service rather than a social media platform.
