India Bans Seafarer Deployment in Hormuz Amid Escalating Maritime Attacks

The Indian government has issued a stern advisory to shipping companies, directing them to immediately cease the deployment of Indian seafarers in the volatile Strait of Hormuz region. This critical decision comes in the wake of escalating attacks on merchant vessels, which have tragically claimed the lives of two Indian seafarers and injured several others.

According to the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), the safety, security, and welfare of Indian seafarers, along with the protection of Indian ships, are paramount. Recent incidents involving vessels such as MT Al Bahiyah, MT Mombasa, GFS Galaxy, MT WEDYAN, and AL REKAYYAT have significantly heightened the risks for commercial shipping and personnel operating in this conflict-affected area.

The DGMA's notification emphasizes the necessity of enhanced precautionary measures given the "heightened security situation in the Persian Gulf region." Shipping companies, ship owners, and managers are explicitly instructed to avoid deploying Indian seafarers on any vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz "until further orders." This directive underscores the gravity of the situation and the government's commitment to protecting its citizens.

Masters of vessels already operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and adjacent waters have been advised to maintain an exceptionally high level of security vigilance. They are required to continuously monitor navigational warnings, security advisories, and updates from competent authorities, implementing all applicable security measures to safeguard their crew and cargo. India holds a significant position in the global maritime industry, being the world's third-largest supplier of seafarers, with over 300,000 professionals serving on international shipping fleets.
