Troops said they destroyed a bridge Cambodia used to move heavy weapons and launched operations against pre-positioned artillery in Koh Kong Province, signaling a concerted push to disrupt weapon flows into the region. The flare-up comes as regional leaders and domestic officials grapple with mixed signals about any possible pause in hostilities, even after a high-profile claim of a ceasefire by a world leader earlier this week.
Thai authorities are weighing drastic steps in response to the crisis, including blocking fuel exports to Cambodia and designating maritime zones near Cambodian ports as high-risk. The navy was told to remain vigilant against ships carrying strategic supplies. The energy ministry noted that Thailand has halted oil exports to Cambodia since June; last year the kingdom exported about 2.2 billion litres of fuel to its neighbor, highlighting the potential economic impact of any disruption.
A curfew was imposed in Trat province as fighting continued across the border. The toll of the week-long clashes has reached at least 16 soldiers and 10 civilians dead, with hundreds of thousands displaced—Thai authorities put the figure at about 258,626 civilians displaced—underscoring the humanitarian toll of the conflict. In Kantharalak District, a 63-year-old villager, Don Patchapan, was killed when a rocket struck a residential area near a school; authorities reported a shrapnel fragment found nearby, underscoring the risk to civilians.
The fighting has drawn international attention and raised concerns about de-escalation, with calls for restraint intensifying as civilians bear the brunt of renewed hostilities. The border remains volatile, and regional observers warn that any misstep could broaden the conflict further.
