India Orders Diplomat Families Out of Bangladesh Over Security Fears

India designates Bangladesh a “non-family” posting for diplomats due to security concerns after more than two dozen protests near the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and a violent demonstration near the mission in Chittagong. The repatriation of dependents has begun at five posts in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh's de facto foreign minister Touhid Hossain told BBC Hindi that India had overreacted by pulling back families, saying there was no evidence Indians' safety couldn't be assured. Indian officials described the move as precautionary.
Only a handful of countries are in the “non-family” category, including Afghanistan and South Sudan, underscoring the seriousness of the security situation.
Protests near diplomatic missions have included a large mob near the assistant high commission in Chattogram, where stones were lobbed at the building, and similar demonstrations in Dhaka.
The policy is intended to safeguard staff and does not suspend diplomatic or consular activities; officials say operations will continue normally while dependents relocate.
Analysts say the move could signal heightened caution ahead of upcoming elections and could affect future engagements, but both sides have reiterated commitment to dialogue.
