The plight of six beluga whales has taken a heartwarming turn as they were successfully airlifted from a defunct marine park in Canada to new, permanent homes across the United States. This marks a significant milestone in a larger rescue operation, which began after Marineland, a theme park and zoo located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, shuttered its doors in 2024, citing an inability to care for its marine mammal residents.
Four of the rescued belugas, Acadia, Lillooet, Osiris, and Sierra, touched down safely at Chicago's prestigious Shedd Aquarium on Tuesday, July 21st. Meanwhile, their companions, Bertie Botts and Frankie, embarked on their journey to SeaWorld in San Antonio, Texas. The intricate relocation process involved heavy-duty cranes to carefully hoist the massive mammals, providing a dramatic visual testament to the scale and complexity of the rescue effort.
These six belugas represent the first group of a larger cohort of 30 whales originally saved from Marineland.
