Major developments unfolded in the Supreme Court on Friday as the Centre informed the apex judicial body that audio recordings allegedly linking former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to the state's ethnic violence have been manipulated. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, presented findings from the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), asserting that forensic analyses revealed "multiple alterations" in the audio clips.
The revelation comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings where the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights has been pressing for an investigation into these controversial audio clips. These recordings reportedly suggested former CM Biren Singh's involvement in the widespread unrest that has gripped Manipur. The Centre's stance before a bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Sanjeev Sachdeva was firm, with Bhati stating, "I want to urge that this writ petition be dismissed with costs. This is clearly manipulated."
In response to these claims, the Supreme Court issued a directive mandating that a copy of the NFSU's six-page forensic report be provided to the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights. Additionally, copies of the report are to be distributed to all involved parties, including the petitioner's counsel and the Centre's counsel, ensuring transparency in the ongoing judicial process.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to the contentious issue. Notably, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioner, had previously cited a report from another forensic laboratory, 'Truth Labs.' This earlier report had concluded with "over 93% certainty" that the voice in the disputed recordings was indeed that of N. Biren Singh, presenting a contrasting view to the NFSU's findings now brought forward by the Centre. The Supreme Court's decision to ensure both reports are considered and shared underscores the gravity and sensitivity of the matter at hand. The legal battle continues as the court seeks to unravel the truth behind the allegations and counter-allegations.
