Budget 2025: Taxpayers Anticipate Income Tax Reforms to Boost Spending
As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present the Union Budget on February 1, 2025, taxpayers are hopeful for significant income tax reforms aimed at increasing disposable income and stimulating consumption.
Currently, under the new tax regime, the basic exemption limit stands at ₹3 lakh. There is anticipation that this threshold may be raised to ₹5 lakh, providing individuals with more disposable income to either spend or save, thereby boosting the overall economy.
Potential Adjustments in Tax Slabs
Taxpayers are also looking forward to possible revisions in tax slabs. One expectation is the introduction of a 15% tax rate for those with an annual income between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh. Currently, incomes between ₹10 lakh and ₹12 lakh are taxed at 15%, while those between ₹12 lakh and ₹15 lakh are taxed at 20%. Such adjustments could reduce the tax burden on the middle class and encourage higher spending.
Enhancements in Deductions and Exemptions
Beyond changes in tax slabs, there is a strong demand for increased deduction limits under various sections of the Income Tax Act. For instance, taxpayers are hoping for higher deductions for interest paid on home loans, health and life insurance premiums, and contributions to the National Pension System (NPS). Currently, the deduction for home loan interest is capped at ₹2 lakh under Section 24(b), and life insurance premiums are eligible for deductions up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C. An increase in these limits would provide additional tax relief and promote investments in these sectors.
Government's Focus on Economic Revival
The government is expected to introduce measures to boost disposable incomes and support local manufacturing. Economists anticipate possible tax reductions on personal incomes, fuel, and cooking gas to provide relief to the middle class. Additionally, the budget may focus on employment generation and skilling initiatives, as previous job creation schemes have yet to be fully implemented.
As the budget announcement approaches, the middle class remains hopeful that the government will implement these tax reforms to alleviate financial burdens and stimulate economic growth.
