A chilling discovery in Guwahati has sent shockwaves through the community after the partially decomposed and headless body of a 25-year-old woman was found in an apartment in the city's Beltola area on Sunday night, September 6, 2026.
Police, responding to complaints of a foul smell from neighbours, broke into the apartment to find the woman's body. The horror deepened when her severed head, wrapped in a polythene bag, was discovered inside the refrigerator. Adding to the gruesome details, the victim's fingers were also allegedly cut off.
The victim has been identified as Riya Talukdar, a boutique worker.
Her husband, Ramanujan Goswami, a cab driver, later surrendered to the police.
He has since been arrested in connection with the horrific crime.
According to a police officer investigating the case, Goswami confessed to the murder, stating it followed a heated argument with his wife. He claimed to have frequent fights with her and alleged she was in an extramarital relationship. He reportedly lost his temper during one such fight on September 3, leading to her death.
A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the apartment.
The police have registered a case and the woman's body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy as investigations continue into this deeply disturbing incident.
