A British man has been arrested in Ecuador in connection with the harrowing discovery of a woman's body found inside a suitcase in Colombia. Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, 46, from Bournemouth, was apprehended at Quito international airport, Ecuador, following an international manhunt.
Colombian authorities accuse Foster-Smith of causing the death of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba. Her body was reportedly found on June 18 in a suitcase within an apartment located in Bogotá's Chicó neighbourhood. Prosecutors allege he beat Villalba to death, then placed her body in the suitcase in an attempt to conceal the crime, before fleeing the scene.
Adding a bizarre twist to the case, Foster-Smith reportedly contacted a newspaper a day before his arrest, denying any involvement. He claimed he was watching an England World Cup match at an Irish bar at the time of the incident, stating, "I was watching England versus Croatia on a big screen in an Irish bar so it wasn't me." He made a second call to the newspaper just hours before his capture. It's understood that these phone calls played a crucial role in authorities tracking down his location.
An arrest warrant had been issued by Colombian prosecutors, and law enforcement agencies, including Dorset police, collaborated to locate Foster-Smith. His arrest brings a significant development to this distressing case that has garnered international attention.
