Illegal Gachibowli Building Collapse: Two Dead, Officer Suspended!
Tragedy strikes Gachibowli as an unauthorised building collapses, claiming two lives. Discover how officials knew about the illegal construction months prior and what's next for public safety.
A multi-storeyed building in Gachibowli tragically collapsed last Saturday, August 22, 2026, leading to the heartbreaking deaths of two individuals and damaging an adjacent property. What makes this incident particularly alarming is that authorities had issued a show-cause notice and speaking orders concerning this very building's unauthorised construction a full 66 days earlier.
The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC)'s Town Planning Section had formally flagged the building at H.No. 1-60/113/135/1, Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, on June 17. Despite these official warnings, the structure, which consisted of a ground floor, six upper floors, and a penthouse, went ahead with construction and ultimately caved in.
In the wake of the devastating collapse, CMC Commissioner G. Srijana took swift action, ordering the immediate suspension of U. Santosh Kumar, the Town Planning Building Officer (TPBO) for Circle-50, Madhapur. His suspension stems from a clear failure to halt the illegal construction. The suspension order explicitly stated that Mr. Kumar's neglect of official duties directly led to the tragic loss of life and gravely endangered public safety. Disciplinary proceedings are now underway against him.
The CMC's Town Planning Section revealed that Farheen Siddiq and Md. Sajid constructed the building without obtaining the necessary permits and failed to maintain the required setbacks. Further investigations suggest that the use of substandard construction materials and a glaring absence of proper technical supervision likely contributed significantly to the catastrophic failure. Following this tragedy, the CMC Commissioner has mandated a comprehensive inspection of all unauthorised constructions across the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation limits, aiming to prevent such incidents from recurring.
