Kym Gleeson, manager of Healthwatch Rotherham, highlighted the problem, telling the BBC that the system "can't always understand what people's inquiry is about due to their broad Yorkshire accent." While the AI firm behind Emma boasts that it can handle 17 languages, the nuances of regional English accents seem to be proving a challenge. This issue is causing considerable frustration among residents, with some patients simply giving up on trying to book appointments.
One disgruntled patient shared their experience with Healthwatch, stating, "I could never get it to understand me, I ended up just hanging up and not bothering to try and book an appointment." This feedback emerged after the watchdog engaged with groups representing older people and veterans' communities, who reported difficulties navigating the system. The system's inability to comprehend local speech patterns is creating a barrier to essential healthcare access for many.
Despite the current issues, Gleeson acknowledged that Emma has the potential to be a beneficial system, especially given its goal of eliminating long phone queues. However, its current performance underscores the importance of regional linguistic diversity and the need for AI systems to be adequately trained and adapted to understand the full spectrum of human speech, particularly in critical public services like healthcare.
