A stag has been put down in London's Richmond Park after it injured a man in his 60s during a picnic. The incident, which occurred last Saturday, led to the Royal Parks charity making the difficult decision to shoot the animal on Monday, citing its aggressive behaviour as a danger to visitors. The injured man was taken to hospital with chest injuries, which were fortunately assessed as neither life-changing nor life-threatening.
The Metropolitan Police were alerted by the London Ambulance Service on Saturday evening regarding the injured park visitor. Officers and paramedics located the man within the sprawling south-west London park. According to a Royal Parks spokesperson, the stag had approached the man's picnic group, actively seeking food, which is believed to have contributed to its dangerous behaviour.
Royal Parks expressed deep regret over the stag's death but stressed that visitor safety is paramount. They suspect that this particular stag had learned to associate people with food, a behaviour often developed when visitors repeatedly feed wild animals. This interaction can cause deer to lose their natural wariness, making them bolder and potentially aggressive when food is not offered.
In the wake of the incident, Royal Parks has reissued a stern warning to the public: deer in their parks are wild animals and should never be fed, approached, or touched. They highlighted their "shock and alarm" at recent online videos and photographs showing people getting dangerously close to deer, even offering them food, in nearby Bushy Park. The charity's advice is clear and simple: maintain a minimum distance of 50 metres from all deer to ensure both human and animal safety. Disregarding this advice puts individuals at real risk of serious injury and can lead to tragic outcomes for the wildlife involved.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife and following park guidelines.
