Uttar Pradesh's political landscape is abuzz with claims of a significant split within the Samajwadi Party (SP), igniting a fresh face-off with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies. Senior figures from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and the BJP have alleged that numerous SP members are looking to defect, especially ahead of the 2027 UP Assembly polls.
Om Prakash Rajbhar, a Uttar Pradesh minister and SBSP chief, along with Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, have been vocal about the supposed cracks within the SP. Rajbhar even went as far as to claim that a prominent SP leader, Ram Gopal Yadav, had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and that investigations into alleged scams from the SP's previous tenure, such as the mining and Gomti River Front scams, were creating pressure on party members. Maurya echoed these sentiments, suggesting that 25 to 26 Samajwadi Party MPs were in contact with the BJP.
However, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has firmly dismissed these allegations, asserting the unity and strength of his party. "Those making predictions should clarify whether the BJP is actually offering their party 75 seats, 50, or merely empty assurances," Yadav posted on X, taking a clear swipe at Rajbhar without naming him. He implied that such rumors were being spread by individuals seeking personal gain through alliances.
Adding another layer to the political discourse, Samajwadi MP Awadhesh Prasad suggested that the BJP's propagation of split rumors is a direct result of their unease over Akhilesh Yadav's growing popularity. Maurya, on the other hand, attributed any unrest within opposition parties to "dynastic politics, corruption, and criminality," shifting responsibility away from the BJP and onto the opposition itself.
This ongoing exchange highlights the heightened political tensions in Uttar Pradesh as parties prepare for future electoral battles, with the SP leadership striving to present a united front against the backdrop of persistent defection claims.
