Former United States President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind FIFA President Gianni Infantino, publicly warning the global football governing body that removing Infantino would be a “terrible mistake.” This statement comes as Infantino faces significant pressure and backlash over his controversial plan to sell off stakes in the men's World Cup to private investors. In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump emphatically stated,

FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino.

He went on to praise Infantino, crediting him with overseeing “the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented,” and cautioned that without him, the event would “never be as successful or profitable again!” The embattled FIFA president's proposal, which included creating a company named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) to manage commercial and operational aspects of FIFA tournaments, with a goal to sell approximately 20 percent to private investors, has drawn widespread criticism.

Infantino has since apologized for this plan, but the fallout continues. In a significant development, UEFA (Europe), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF (North, Central America, and the Caribbean) have held initial talks about potentially organizing their own competitions.

These confederations have accused Infantino of “deception” and are reportedly seeking his resignation, preferring he leave his position with dignity before his re-election bid in March next year, rather than facing removal.

UEFA has even previously threatened a boycott of FIFA competitions, highlighting the depth of the crisis.
