Milo Yiannopoulos, the controversial far-right political commentator, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport this past Thursday. The 41-year-old British national, known for his provocative statements and associations, is now in ICE custody and faces removal from the United States.
According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security on X, Yiannopoulos legally entered the U.S. on May 14, 2019, but subsequently overstayed his visa. He had been issued a final order of removal by an Immigration Judge on July 22 after failing to appear for his immigration hearing. A mugshot released by the agency shows a somber-looking Yiannopoulos, highlighting the seriousness of his situation.
Yiannopoulos has a history in alt-right politics, notably running Kanye West's presidential campaign in 2022 and later serving as an unpaid intern for former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
He also previously worked for Breitbart, a prominent far-right news and opinion website.
His detention in Louisiana came just a day before Kanye West was scheduled to perform in New Orleans, though it's unclear if Yiannopoulos intended to attend.
The news of his detention has drawn mixed reactions.
Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and ally of former President Donald Trump, publicly applauded ICE for detaining Yiannopoulos, stating, "Today is a great day for America." Yiannopoulos will remain in ICE custody as the process for his removal from the country continues.
