Tragedy Strikes Dominican Republic Resort: 1 Dead, 1,700 Evacuated After Massive Blaze 🔥

A devastating fire tore through the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, on Friday, resulting in the death of one Italian tourist and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests. The 46-year-old woman, whose identity has not yet been fully released, was confirmed deceased by emergency services.

In addition to the fatality, three individuals required medical attention at local facilities, while another six were treated on-site for minor injuries. Drone footage captured the harrowing scene, showing the extensive spread of the fire across multiple buildings within the resort complex, with thick black smoke billowing high into the air.

The cause of the early-morning blaze is still under investigation. However, initial findings suggest that strong wind conditions combined with the presence of highly flammable thatched roofs on some of the resort's structures contributed to the rapid and widespread nature of the fire. The country's Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that the fire has since been brought under control, and all evacuated guests have been safely relocated to other hotels in the area. Authorities also reassured the public that general tourist activities in Bayahibe and its surrounding areas remain unaffected.

The Italian embassy in the Dominican Republic is actively providing assistance, meeting with the deceased woman's husband and helping approximately 285 Italian tourists affected by the incident. This support includes issuing emergency passports for those whose travel documents were destroyed and arranging flights home. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which franchises the independently owned and operated resort, issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim's family and confirmed the hotel's closure until further notice, pending autopsy results and further investigation.
