Europe Braces for Extreme September Heat Dome: UK Sees Brief Warmth

Europe is gearing up for an intense start to September, as a significant heat dome is predicted to bring soaring temperatures across the continent. Forecasters, including the BBC, are warning that southern European regions and the Mediterranean could experience highs reaching into the upper 30s and even 40 degrees Celsius early next month.

This extreme weather phenomenon is caused by warm air being pushed northwards from North Africa, impacting countries like France, Spain, and Italy. A large area of high pressure settles over a region, creating what's known as a heat dome. Under this high pressure, air sinks, compresses, and warms, while cloud formation is suppressed, allowing strong sunshine to bake the ground.

Spain and Italy are expected to see the most severe conditions, with temperatures between 38°C and 42°C in valleys and coastal areas.

Experts suggest this heatwave could be prolonged for Southern Europe.

The Spanish and French Weather Services have issued warnings about an increased risk of wildfires, as the land remains parched from the hot and dry summer months.

While southern Europe faces an extended period of intense heat, the United Kingdom will also experience a brief spell of warmer weather this weekend. Highs of around 26°C are expected, particularly in areas like London on Sunday.

However, unlike the persistent heat dome in the south, the UK's warm spell is anticipated to be short-lived.

Conditions are forecast to become more changeable, with rain predicted for the north and west, and temperatures expected to cool to below 20°C early next week. By Tuesday, temperatures across Europe are also expected to begin moderating, though the long-term impact on southern regions remains a concern.
