Market Comeback: Sensex Recovers 790 Points as Oil Prices Dip!
Indian stocks bounce back! Sensex and Nifty erase early losses as oil prices cool. Catch the latest on market trends, the Rupee's record low, and top sectoral gains.
It was a bit of a roller-coaster ride for investors on Dalal Street today. After a shaky start that saw the markets take a deep dive, the Indian stock market staged a major recovery. The Sensex managed to bounce back by nearly 790 points from its lowest point of the day, while the Nifty climbed over 260 points from its intraday lows. By the time the closing bell rang, the Sensex stood at 75,318, up by 117 points, and the Nifty 50 finished at 23,659, gaining about 41 points.
What caused this sudden change in mood? A big part of the relief came from the global oil market, where prices finally dropped below the $110 per barrel mark. This cooling off, combined with a slight dip in bond yields after they had soared to record highs, gave investors the confidence to start buying again. The market's volatility index, the India VIX, also took a breather, dropping about 2% during the afternoon session.
The recovery wasn't just limited to the big players. We saw a broad-based improvement across the board, with small-cap and mid-cap indices also inching into the green. Sector-wise, it was a great day for Oil & Gas stocks, which led the pack with gains of around 1.7%. Investors also showed interest in the auto and financial sectors, largely thanks to some solid quarterly earnings reports. On the flip side, media stocks struggled, ending the day as the biggest losers with a drop of over 1%.
However, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. While the stock market recovered, the Indian Rupee hit a fresh record low against the US dollar, showing that there are still some underlying pressures on the economy. Additionally, foreign institutional investors continued to sell off their Indian equities, a trend that market watchers are keeping a very close eye on. For now, though, local investors seem happy to focus on the rebound in large-cap stocks and the relief at the petrol pump.
