Karnataka's political landscape is abuzz after significant cross-voting marred the recent Legislative Council polls, leading to an "embarrassing defeat" for the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)). The regional party, an ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with the BJP, is now gearing up to raise the serious issue with BJP central leaders.
Sources indicate that at least four JD(S) legislators cross-voted, contributing to a total of 11 votes from the NDA stables shifting to the Congress party. Adding to the complexity, four votes initially allocated by the BJP to the JD(S) candidate also reportedly went to the Congress. Three additional cross-votes remain a mystery, deepening the intrigue surrounding the election outcome.
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has already initiated discussions with BJP central leaders regarding the poll debacle. He is expected to provide a detailed report outlining the possibilities behind the cross-voting and address the last-minute coordination issues that plagued the alliance. It's understood that a significant lack of coordination between the JD(S) and BJP ahead of the elections, including the absence of a joint preparatory meeting, played a role.
The JD(S) had even taken its legislators to a resort near Devanahalli for training, while the BJP conducted its training in Bengaluru. Concerns over cross-voting within the BJP itself reportedly led to a reduction in votes promised to the JD(S) candidate, from six to four, with even those four possibly not reaching their intended recipient.
Despite the electoral setback, JD(S) sources maintain that the alliance with the BJP will "remain solid and even become stronger." They believe the ruling Congress has "hurt both NDA partners," suggesting a united front against their common rival. Interestingly, 17 of the 18 JD(S) legislators participated in the pre-election training and later met with Mr. Kumaraswamy, despite the cross-voting.
