McMafia where a posh banker tries to stay clean but ends up becoming a global crime boss, how convenient
Alex Godman just he wants to be a normal British businessman. He has a nice girlfriend and a fancy office in London. But his family is Russian and they used to be big deals in the underworld back home. He tries so hard to stay away from the shady stuff but the money world is just as dirty as the mafia world.
The show does a great job of showing how global crime works now. It is not guys in tracksuits hitting people with bats in dark alleys anymore. It is guys in penthouses moving billions of dollars with a laptop. It is cold and calculated and honestly it makes me want to close my bank account and hide my money under a rug.

James Norton as Alex and he has about one expression for the whole eight episodes. He looks like he is constantly calculating the tax on a murder. Some people think he is boring but I think he is perfect for the role. He is supposed to be a guy who suppresses every emotion so he can survive. He moves through the world like a ghost in a very expensive suit. You watch him slowly lose his soul piece by piece. One day he is worried about his hedge fund and the next he is negotiating with cartels in Mexico or hackers in Israel. It is a slow transformation but it is scary because he is so calm about it. He never raises his voice but you know he is getting more dangerous every minute.

The World Is Very Big and Very Scary
This show travels everywhere. One minute you are in a rainy street in London and then suddenly you are in Mumbai Docks with Nawazuddin Siddiqui or a snowy street in Moscow. It shows how everything is connected. A shipping container in one country affects a bank in another country. It is called McMafia because crime has become a global franchise like a fast food place. The production looks like it cost a billion dollars. Everything is shiny and sleek which makes the violence feel even more shocking when it actually happens. It is not an action show with gunfights every five minutes. It is a show about people talking in quiet rooms and deciding who lives or dies over a glass of vintage wine.

Family Is The Real Problem
The heart of the story is the Godman family. His dad is a sad drunk who misses his old power and his mom is just trying to keep everyone from getting killed. They love Alex but they are also the reason his life is falling apart. You feel bad for them but then you remember they are all living on blood money. The drama at the dinner table is just as intense as the drama with the assassins. It shows that you can never really escape where you came from no matter how much you change your accent or how many charity events you go to. It is a depressing thought but it makes for great television. If you like shows where people look glamorous while doing terrible things then you should definitely watch this.
