Fadnavis Announces $11 Billion Tata-Led ‘Innovation City’ Near Mumbai

On Thursday, January 22, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the creation of an "Innovation City" close to Navi Mumbai Airport. According to Fadnavis, the Tata Group is anticipated to invest roughly $11 billion in the development of the city and a data center.

On the fringes of the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit in Davos, Switzerland, the announcement was made. According to the chief minister of Maharashtra, the Innovation City will serve as India's global innovation ecosystem, hosting various innovators and establishing multiple AI and innovation hubs.

"As technology reshapes the world economy, Maharashtra is building a responsible, world-class innovation ecosystem that will directly benefit our people and strengthen the state’s economic future," the CMO said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

However, it appeared that netizens' opinions of the plan were divided. A few X users questioned the plan's scope and even brought up the unfinished smart city projects from the past.

I'm not at all surprised you chose Mumbai. While the rest of the state wants to become urban, you decide to over-urbanise the already urban city. What is your obsession for this one city alone over and above the rest of the state?

Maharashtra's competitiveness on the international scene is anticipated to be further enhanced by the establishment of a dedicated innovation hub close to Mumbai, which currently serves as India's financial capital.
