Mishra Accepts Bypoll Snub After Delhi Visit Amidst Protests

Former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has publicly accepted the BJP's decision to deny him a by-election ticket from Datia, following a visit to Delhi that came amidst widespread protests from his supporters. The party instead fielded debutant Ashutosh Tiwari for the July 30 Assembly by-election.
Mishra's snub had ignited significant unrest in Datia, with his supporters resorting to violent protests. These clashes led to injuries among at least eight police personnel, including the SP and Additional SP, and resulted in FIRs being lodged against over 20 BJP workers for rioting and vandalizing. Mishra, addressing the situation, described the protests as a result of "sudden anger" and stated that "everything has calmed down now."
Despite his initial claims of visiting Delhi "just like that" and not meeting any high command leaders, sources indicate that Mishra did meet BJP national president Nitin Nabin. During this alleged meeting, he was reportedly instructed to quell his supporters and actively work for the party's official candidate.
The Delhi visit followed a series of meetings Mishra held in Bhopal on Saturday (July 11), where he met with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, State BJP chief Hemant Khandelwal, and zonal general secretary (organisation) Ajay Jamwal. These discussions took place against the backdrop of growing murmurs about his resentment over being overlooked for the bypoll ticket.
Once considered one of the most influential BJP leaders in the state, Mishra now states that the episode has shown he does not possess a "tall stature." He emphasized his commitment to the party, declaring, "Accepting the party’s decision with utmost respect and working for the organisation is our sole objective. I will work as a dedicated party worker." He also clarified that he has not sought, nor been given, any assurances regarding his political future by the party leadership. This development aims to bring an end to the internal strife that has characterized the run-up to the Datia by-election.
