Shocking Upset! Greece Stuns Germany 1-0 in Klopp's Home Debut Nightmare
Greece delivers a stunning defeat to Germany in the Nations League, marking a historic first-ever win and spoiling Jurgen Klopp's highly anticipated home debut as head coach. What went wrong for the Germans?
In a stunning turn of events that sent shockwaves through European football, Greece secured a historic 1-0 victory over Germany in their Nations League Group A2 encounter on Sunday. This remarkable win not only propelled Greece to the top of their group with six points but also thoroughly spoiled the home debut of Germany’s new coach, Jurgen Klopp.
Dimitris Kourbelis was the hero for Greece, netting the decisive goal in the 74th minute with a deflected low drive that left the German defense stunned. This marked the first time in 11 attempts that the Greeks have ever beaten Germany, making the achievement even sweeter.
For Germany, who now languish on a single point after two matches, it was a bitter pill to swallow.
The hosts dominated possession, holding nearly 80% in the first half alone, yet they struggled to convert their control into clear-cut chances. Sloppy defending in the second half ultimately cost them dearly, providing the opening Greece needed to launch their successful attack.
Coach Klopp, who took over in July following Germany's early World Cup exit, is still searching for his first win, having drawn 1-1 against the Netherlands earlier in the week.
A visibly disappointed Klopp reflected on the loss, stating,
I could have lived with us not winning but you cannot lose such a game.
He acknowledged the team is still in a transitional phase, adding, “We have been together for a week now, all mixed together, and that needs time. The result is not cool but it is absolutely part of the process.” Germany’s upcoming fixtures include a match against Serbia on Thursday before a challenging trip to Greece three days later.
In other Nations League action, the Netherlands secured a 2-1 victory over Serbia, thanks to a double strike from Mexx Meerdink, marking a winning start for their new coach Xavi Hernandez. Defending champions Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, edged past hosts Norway 2-1, with goals from Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos, putting them atop Group A4.
Denmark also claimed their first points in Group A4, easing past Wales 2-0, while Ireland made a strong statement in Group B3 with a 3-0 triumph over Israel.
