Internet Shutdown in Faridabad Today for Major Demolition Drive

Residents in parts of Faridabad are waking up to a digital blackout today. The Haryana government has officially suspended mobile internet services and bulk SMS across a one-kilometer radius in the NIT Zone. This temporary measure is in place to maintain law and order as authorities prepare for a high-stakes demolition drive.
The suspension, which covers everything from 2G to 5G and even dongle services, began at 12:30 a.m. and is scheduled to last until 10:00 p.m. on May 30. While voice calls remain unaffected, the digital curbs are meant to prevent the spread of misinformation and potential unrest during the operation.
The heart of the matter lies in the construction of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor. To make way for this major infrastructure project, several structures have been marked for removal. Notably, these include a temple and a mosque, which has naturally heightened concerns about public peace and the potential for communal tension.
Law enforcement and local administration requested the shutdown after assessing potential risks of tension, damage to public or private property, and possible disruption of peace. By limiting communication channels, the government aims to ensure the demolition proceeds smoothly without any external interference or the coordination of protests via social media.
Authorities have clarified that banking services and mobile recharges via SMS are exempt from this order to minimize the impact on essential daily tasks. However, residents in the affected 1 kilometer radius around the NIT Zone will have to manage without their usual mobile data for the duration of the day.
