China & Bangladesh Strengthen Ties, Focus on Teesta River Project

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recently concluded a significant visit to Beijing, deepening diplomatic and economic ties between Bangladesh and China. During his trip, which included meetings with Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping, key discussions revolved around regional development and bilateral cooperation.
A major highlight of the visit was China's explicit support for Bangladesh's ambitious Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. This large-scale river development initiative is crucial for Bangladesh, and China has committed to expediting a feasibility study and providing necessary support. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that this cooperation does not “target any third party” and should remain free from external influence, addressing regional sensitivities.
Beyond the Teesta project, the two nations agreed to bolster collaboration in several other vital areas. These include integrated water resources management, water resources planning, hydrological forecasting, flood prevention and disaster reduction, and crucial river dredging. Such comprehensive water-related cooperation is expected to significantly aid Bangladesh in managing rivers like the Meghna, which frequently causes annual floods. The joint statement released after the visit also highlighted stronger cooperation in maritime affairs.
Prime Minister Rahman also seized the opportunity to address economic imbalances, urging China to work towards reducing the existing trade gap between the two countries. This visit marks Prime Minister Rahman's first official trip to China since assuming office, underscoring the growing importance of Beijing-Dhaka relations.
President Xi Jinping assured Rahman of China's steadfast support, reaffirming China's commitment as a “trustworthy” partner. This high-level engagement signifies a new chapter in China-Bangladesh relations, promising enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors while navigating complex regional dynamics.
