UK Sizzles at 38.1°C! Amber Heat Warning Issued as Records Tumble
The UK faces its fifth heatwave with temperatures soaring to 38.1°C. An amber extreme heat warning is in effect, raising health concerns. Stay cool and informed!
The UK is once again grappling with extreme heat, marking its fifth heatwave of the year. Thursday saw temperatures soar to a blistering 38.1°C (100°F) at Kew Gardens, provisionally making it the hottest day of the year so far. This isn't the first time the 38°C mark has been breached this year; Lingwood, Norfolk, also experienced it on June 26th. Notably, 2026 is only the second time on record that temperatures this high have been observed twice within a single calendar year, the previous instance being in 2022.
The Met Office has issued a rare amber extreme heat warning, covering vast swathes of the UK including Eastern England, London, the South-East, the Midlands, North-West England, South-West England, and parts of Yorkshire and Humber. This warning is active until 23:59 BST tonight. Alongside this, the UK Health Security Agency has put in place amber heat health alerts across all of England, valid until 21:00 BST on August 14th. These alerts underscore significant potential impacts on health and social care services, including a predicted rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over, or individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Adding to the challenges, many areas are bracing for a "tropical night," where temperatures are not expected to drop below 20°C. This phenomenon, fueled by increasingly humid air spreading into western regions, poses additional stress on the body due to the cumulative effect of persistent heat day and night. The persistent high temperatures have also led to a new provisional record for the number of days in a calendar year with temperatures of 37°C or above. This has only occurred nine times since records began.
While the current heatwave presents considerable risks, there's some relief on the horizon. Temperatures are expected to gradually fall by the weekend. However, even at their lowest, they are still forecast to be around or slightly above the average for mid-August. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, seek shade, and check on vulnerable individuals during this intense period.
